Description The South Australian Scaled Area Grid dataset was generated as a supplementary layer to help calculate area summaries (in square metres) for the SA Land Cover layers that are provided with a geographic coordinate system (un-projected). It is recognized that projecting raster datasets from a geographic coordinate system to a new measured spatial reference system (such as the Lamberts Conformal Conic projection used for state-wide GIS layers for South Australia) can result in the map information becoming distorted. This distortion can affect both the arrangement and proportion of categorical classes across the dataset - the SA Land Cover layers remain un-projected to prevent this distortion.

The raster values in this layer provide the area of each grid cell in square metres based on the geographic transformation of decimal degree format (GCS GDA 1994) to a projected metre-based coordinate system (SA Lambert Conformal Conic GDA 1994). These 'scaled' area values take into consideration the variation in the transformed grid cell size of a projected grid the area decreasing with latitudes further from the equator.

Lineage This dataset was generated using ArcGIS tools to implement a latitude / longitude transformation algorithm (converting from decimal degrees format to projected metre-based coordinate system). The dataset is provided as a supplementary layer to be used as an input to GIS processing when calculating area summaries (initially in square metres) from the categorical SA Land Cover layers that are provided in a geographical coordinate spatial reference system.

It is recognized that projecting raster datasets from a geographic coordinate system to a new measured spatial reference system (such as the Lamberts Conformal Conic projection used for state-wide GIS layers for South Australia) can result in the map information becoming distorted, affecting both the arrangement and proportion of categorical classes across the dataset. In South Australia a projected grid in Lamberts Conformal Comic would vary from a resolution of approx. 26.2 m x 26.2 m at a latitude of -26 (north of the state) to approx. 24.6 m x 24.6 m at a latitude of -38.25 (south of the state).

The SA Land Cover Most Likely layers were developed with a geographic coordinate system (not projected to a measured spatial reference system). To ensure that meaningful area summaries can be generated from these layers using GIS tools, such as the ArcGIS Zonal Statistics tool, the SA Scaled Area Grid was provided as the 'input value raster', where the land cover classes to be summarised by area were provided as the 'input raster zone data'.
Completeness The dataset is considered complete for South Australia, based on the resolution (0.00025 decimal degrees) and extent of the SA Land Cover layers.
Positional Accuracy The positional accuracy of this dataset is considered high however the resolution (0.00025 decimal degrees) and extent was generated to match the SA Land Cover layers with scaled area based on a Lamberts Conformal Conic projection (GDA 94 datum). The dataset may not be coincident with other datasets unless that have been processed to have the same geographic coordinate system, resolution and extent as the SA Land Cover layers.
