Adelaide Suburban Greenness 1987-2020

Dataset Number2560
Dataset TitleAdelaide Suburban Greenness 1987-2020
CustodianData Authority: Department for Environment and Water
Data Provider: Department for Environment and Water

Description

DescriptionThis dataset contains the mean Summer greenness values for each of 411 suburbs within the greater Adelaide metropolitan region for each year from 1987 to 2020. The values have been derived from the Joint Remote Sensing Research Program's Fractional Cover 2 (Landsat) product.
UsageInform decision making and guiding investment in greening works by DEW, the Green Adelaide Landscape board, and partner agencies.

Data Quality

Lineage33 years of Seasonal Fractional Cover data covering the Summer quarter (Dec, Jan, Feb) was downloaded and analysed within ESRI's ArcGIS 10.6 software. All suburbs fully or partially within the Green Adelaide Landscape board were identified and copied into a vector spatial layer. Zonal statistics were generated for each suburb for each of the 33 sets of data including cell count, total cell area, percentage of each suburb covered by remotely sensed data, and mean greenness fraction. Results were exported into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet where additional statistics were generated including mean long-term greenness, suburb ranking from greenest to least green, and deviance from Adelaide's long-term average. Fractional cover computes the proportion of each pixel (30 x 30m) that is green, non-green, and bare. Further detail can be found here
CompletenessThe dataset covers all 411 suburbs fully or partially located within the Green Adelaide Landscape Board boundary. Only partial satellite data was available in some years, for some suburbs primarily due to cloud and/or sensor issues. In cases where no data was available for a given suburb in any given year, the Coverage is reported as '0' and the Greenness value is reported as '-100'.
Positional AccuracyThe derived fractional cover dataset is comprised of 30m pixels with an estimated positional accuracy of +/-15m. The suburb boundary vector data has an estimated positional accuracy of +/-5m within the Adelaide metropolitan region.

Maintenance MethodNew summer season fractional cover data will be downloaded and zonal statistics generated within GIS to determine each suburb's percentage of imagery coverage and mean green fraction. Long term average, ranking, and deviance from average will be recalculated for each suburb.

Attributes

TableNameField AliasData TypeDescription
Primary TableSUBURBNiltextOfficially gazetted name of suburb
Primary Table8788_GREENNilFloating PointMean green fraction for all non-Null cells within the boundary of each suburb for the period December 1987 to March 1988
Primary Table8788_COVERNilFloating PointPercentage of each suburb covered by non-Null 30m x 30m cells for the period December 1987 to March 1988. This gives a measure of confidence in greenness values. Ie higher percentage means more valid pixel readings were available. Very low percentages may influence confidence in trends.
Primary Tablexxxx_GREENNilFloating PointMean green fraction for all non-Null cells within the boundary of each suburb for the period December to March of the given years eg 1516 = 2015/2016
Primary Tablexxxx_COVERNilFloating PointPercentage of each suburb covered by valid 30m x 30m cells for the December to March period of the given years eg 1516 = 2015/2016
Primary Table33YR_AVERAGENilFloating PointThe mean greenness value for the suburb over the 33 years of data.
Primary TableSuburban Greenness RankingNilFloating PointSuburbs ranked by their long term (33 year) average greenness. 1 being the greenest, 411 being the least green
Primary TableDeviance from AverageNilFloating PointNumber of percentage points above or below the long term (33 year) mean greenness of greater Adelaide (30.6%)
Primary TableChange in GreennessNilFloating PointThe suburb's mean greenness change in percentage points from the Summer of 1990/1991 to the Summer of 2018/2019
