Description

DescriptionThis dataset contains the spatial locations of the opportunistically collected Phytophthora sp. infestation information contained in the DEW's Biological Database of South Australia (BDBSA). The observations examine the presence (suspected by physical observation and/or confirmed by soil testing) of Phytophthora cinnamomi in native vegetation across South Australia - focusing on higher rainfall areas especially Mount Lofty Block, Kangaroo Island and southern Eyre Peninsula. The information has been collected by staff from DEW and other government and local government organisations. Data is presence only.
UsageThe data can be used to assist in the management and control of the spread of Phytophthora sp. in South Australia.

Data Quality

LineageLocational information is collected in a number of formats. This includes map coordinates, gps coordinates and general coordinates determined after field work has been completed. The data is verified by the Ecologist - Biosecurity and then entered into BDBSA. A table containing the required fields is then derived from BDBSA on a weekly basis, a spatial layer is generated and then re-loaded into Spatial data library. Verification of the presence of phytophthora is based on a laboratory testing of a soil sample or on the presence of symptoms of phytophthora on plant species that are known to be susceptible. For most sites, all or some of the following details are noted: Species affected, topography, soil, size of area or number of species affected. Data collected opportunistically ie when someone is suspecting the presence of Phytophthora through symptoms in plants known to be susceptible to the disease. Data is collected all year round. Field work is always conducted by at least one competent person.
CompletenessEvery effort has been made to present the locations of Phytophthora infestation as accurate as possible especially when GPS coordinates have been provided. Data set is incomplete and Phytophthora infestations may be present elsewhere. The Ecologist - Biosecurity and designated regional DEH staff regularly collect field information, and the database is then updated by the Ecologist - Biosecurity.
Positional AccuracyPoints are considered reasonably accurate especially when GPS coordinates have been provided. Positional accuracy is related to a location method (Reliability 1=0-50m;2=>50-100m; 3=>100-250m)

Flora.PhytophthoraDATEACCURACY CharacterAccuracy of the sighting date. If SIGHTING DATE is the 1st of a month or year it may be that the record was observed on that day (D), sometime that month (M), sometime that year (Y), sometime that decade (T) or sometime that century (C).
Flora.PhytophthoraSIGHTINGNR IntegerOnly populated for Opportune records, (where SOURCE = OP). It is a unique identifier generated in the database for each unique species record
Flora.PhytophthoraRELIABNR NumberEstimation of positional accuracy of the coordinates (In Reserves this field is generated by spatially determining the maximum distance from the centroid to the boundary of the reserve). The description of these codes is available in RELIABDESC.
Flora.PhytophthoraRELIABDESC CharacterDescription of RELIABNR, and relates to the positional reliability of the coordinates, (eg 0-5m, 1-10km, etc).
Flora.PhytophthoraSPRELIABCODE CharacterThe reliability that the species was correctly identified. A filter has been applied to the dataset so that only records with "Y" Or "A" Or "P" and 1-4 are included. Plant Population codes are 1=Voucher in a state herbarium: ID by herbarium staff or taxonomist, 2=ID by herbarium staff or taxonomist, 3=ID by experienced field botanist, 4=Unconfirmed field sighting, and 5=Correct ID doubtful.
Flora.PhytophthoraOBSERVER CharacterThe person(s) who observed the species.
