Aquatic Reserves

Dataset Number954
Dataset TitleAquatic Reserves
CustodianData Authority: Department of Primary Industries and Regions
Data Provider: Department of Primary Industries and Regions

Description

DescriptionDescribes the location and characteristics of all current aquatic reserves proclaimed under Section 4 of the Fisheries Management Act 2007. South Australia's aquatic reserves have been established to protect the habitat, ecosystems and communities of the rich variety of underwater organisms found in the State's marine and estuarine waters. Fishing and other activities may be prohibited or restricted within these areas.

The diversity of species is a result of a remarkable array of coastal landforms and habitats and the considerable variability in sea temperatures along the South Australian coast. These factors have combined to produce a rich variety of underwater organisms and communities, many of which are found nowhere else in the world.

South Australia's first aquatic reserves were established in 1971. The most recent proclamation was made as the Fisheries Management (Aquatic Reserves) Proclamation 2016 and published in the South Australian Government Gazette of 20 October 2016 beginning on page 4071.

These data may be viewed, interrogated and downloaded from PIRSA's website at http://www.pir.sa.gov.au/fishing/closures_and_aquatic_reserves/aquatic_reserves.
UsageUsed as an administrative data layer to ensure the effective regulation of fishing activities to protect the habitat, ecosystems and communities of underwater organisms found in the State's marine and estuarine waters.

Data Quality

LineageKeyboard capture from coordinate data as defined by proclamation (scale independent), the best available mapping of the Mean High Water Mark from DEWNR (nominal scale 1:50,000), Marine Navigation Markers from DPTI and geometric buffering where relevant.
CompletenessSpatial data is 100% complete and up to date. Associated attribute data is 100% complete.
Positional AccuracyMost boundaries are constructed from lines of latitude and longitude, hence are scale independent. The accuracy of other boundaries is dependent upon the source e.g. the Mean High Water Mark coastline.
