Description

DescriptionSoil Landscape Map Units have recognizable topographic features formed on a particular geological material and containing a limited and defined range of soils. They therefore have similar land and soil characteristics and land use potential. Soil Landscape Map Unit (LANSLU) codes incorporate a Land System code (first three characters) and a Soil Landscape Unit code (remaining characters) specific to that Land System. A hierarchy of landscape mapping units has been developed for southern South Australia, based upon Soil Landscape Map Units. This hierarchy, from the broadest to most detailed, is as follows: Biophysical Regions, Biophysical Subregions, Land Zones (only Kangaroo Island), Land Systems and Soil Landscape Map Units. Spatially undefined landscape features (e.g. dune, swale, rise, plain), otherwise termed unmapped 'components', are also described within Soil Landscape Map Units.
UsageUsed to supply Government, community groups, industry and the general public with regional, subregional and catchment level soil and land information for southern South Australia. This data is used to produce maps, statistics and reports displaying and describing: Broad landscape features such as recurring patterns of geomorphology, topography, soils affecting vegetation, land use, land management and productivity. Soil Landscape Unit Maps can be constructed by displaying Land System and Soil Landscape Unit boundaries over Land Types (see layer file for Land Type descriptions). Soil and Land Attribute Data have also been described on the basis of Soil Landscape Map Units. 41 Soil and Land Attribute Datasets are available, which contain land resource descriptions (e.g. soil types, erosion potential, salinity, inherent fertility, surface texture, etc) for producing soil and land attribute maps, calculating soil and land attribute spatial data statistics, and for use in land use planning, developing land management guidelines and informing monitoring programs on agricultural land. Land Use Potential data for a range of agricultural crops has subsequently been developed using the Soil and Land Attribute Data, which indicate the potential of our land and soils to support particular usesSELECT 1 FROM DUAL; Policy developmentSELECT 1 FROM DUAL; Industry developmentSELECT 1 FROM DUAL; Planning. Data Quality

LineageThe dataset is based on an interpretation of 1:40,000 stereo colour aerial photography and limited field inspection of landscapes and soils by soil scientists. Soil Landscape Map Unit boundaries were determined after an integration of field observations and recordingsSELECT 1 FROM DUAL; laboratory analysesSELECT 1 FROM DUAL; stereoscopic examination of aerial photographsSELECT 1 FROM DUAL; understanding of regional landscape processes and stratigraphySELECT 1 FROM DUAL; existing soil and geological mapping data and an examination of land and soil attributes (with reference to attribute classification criteria and descriptions in the document Assessing Agricultural Land. (Maschmedt, 2002)).
CompletenessComplete. The spatial data is subject to amendment as and when more data become available.
Positional AccuracyThe accuracy is to the scale of mapping (50 metres at 1:50,000 and 300 metres at 1:100,000 mapping scale). Soil Landscape Map Units and associated data are to be used at the regional, subregional and catchment-level, and can be used to provide property overviewsSELECT 1 FROM DUAL; however, they cannot to be used at the paddock level. South East, Kangaroo Island, Mount Lofty Ranges and the 'bottom' of Yorke Peninsula have been mapped at 1:50,000. Eyre Peninsula, the main part of Yorke Peninsula, Murray Mallee and Northern Agricultural Districts have been mapped at 1:100,000.
