Description This dataset represents the State Government's key Pre-European Settlement floristic vegetation mapping layer for the SA agricultural region. It identifies floristic composition and general structural information (referred to as vegetation communities) of areas of native vegetation thought to have been found at a particular location in the South Australia agricultural region prior to European settlement (1836).
Dataset Use This information is a key element in the understanding of the pre-settlement distribution of fauna and flora. Pre-European settlement vegetation information is also significant information required for any environmental analysis aiming to determine conservation status of remnant (extant) native vegetation types, and vegetation types that are poorly represented in the reserve system. The mapping can be used to provide information on a regional or local scale. This dataset is available for government, non government and community groups.

Data Quality

Lineage The vegetation community type and delineation of boundaries is based on a variety of sources, including: historical and contemporary aerial photography (including orthophotography), original land survey maps for the hundreds, soil landscape mapping by DENR (formally DWLBC), contour mapping, watercourse mapping, Forestry SA information and extant regional floristic mapping (DENR). Pre 2007, boundaries were digitised onto a mylar medium using a 1:50,000 topographic mapsheet base. These mapsheets were then digitised into Arc/Info coverages with vegetation types recorded as coded mapping groups as polygon attributes. Individual mapsheets were then brought together using GIS techniques and edge-matched for internal polygon coding consistency. This was undertaken on a region by region basis as a series of vegetation mapping projects with GIS outputs maintained as individual region-based datasets. Since 2007 new Pre-European settlement vegetation mapping has been captured directly into a State-wide layer (in a spatial edit database environment only - with mapping still delivered as region-based datasets). In 2010 the region-based Pre-European settlement mapping groups (vegetation communities) were consolidated within the State-wide layer, in an attempt to aggregate similar vegetation communities mapped in adjacent/contiguous regions. The dataset has been delivered as a state-wide layer since this time.
Completeness Dataset is incomplete for the Agricultural Region of SA, in particular the parts of the Mid North, Eyre Peninsula and Far West regions. Mapping is complete for the South East, Murray Mallee, Western Murray Flats, Adelaide Plains, South Mount Lofty and parts of the Mid North region. The final dataset will be a complete Agricultural region layer indicating presence and type of native vegetation (no date has been established for dataset completion). Historic Pre-European Settlement vegetation mapping datasets that are available for SA have been excluded from this dataset, due to the coarse scale of these datasets. These datasets are: Bauer (Kangaroo Island), Boomsma (State-wide) and Carnahan (Australia-wide).
Positional Accuracy The positional accuracy is dependent on the original source of the imagery and the capture process and, where applicable, artefacts of the imagery's rectification. This information is stored as attributes on the spatial data at the individual polygon level. Pre-European settlement vegetation communities have generally been mapped at 1:50,000 scale using a combination of 1:50,000 topographic features and 1:40,000 aerial photographs, except for the South East and Adelaide Plains regions. The Adelaide Plains is mapped at 1:250,000 scale onto a regional base map, with boundaries representing a guide only. The South East region was mapped from unrectified 1945 1:20,000 black and white RAAF aerial photography (for subcoastal areas), 1:50,000 black and white 1969 and 1981 aerial photographs and. 1:40,000 colour aerial photographs. Pre 2007, vegetation community boundaries were digitised from hardcopy photographs using the appropriate 1:50,000 topographic mapsheet spatial boundaries for spatial registration and correction. Since 2007 the boundaries have been captured using ortho-rectified aerial photography mosaics and heads-up digitising techniques directly into a GIS. All Pre-European settlement vegetation community boundaries represent an arbitrary line that is based on a subjective assessment of the best information available at the time of mapping. PLEASE NOTE: the Pre-European settlement vegetation mapping should not be used at scales beyond which it was captured - this scale is recorded against each polygon feature in the vegetation mapping data attribute table, refer to attributes in the `MINSCALE' field of the polygon dataset.
