Description
Description | This study was undertaken to assist in flood preparedness and risk management activities for the River Murray. The study predicts the flood extent for a range of flows when measured at the border to South Australia which are expressed in megalitres per day (ML/d).

Usage | Identify the extent of inundation and potential hazard resulting from a variety of flood scenarios.
The limit of flooding shown is not a boundary between flood prone and flood free land. Flooding may affect land outside the shown extend due to a range of local factors.
The modelling assumes that all inundated areas have stabilised to the given flow conditions. However, wetlands and other backwaters may take some time to fill, potentially weeks. Consequently, the flood maps may overestimate inundation in some areas away from the main channel. |

Data Quality
Lineage | The flood maps were created using the hydraulic modelling tool MIKE FLOOD which links together hydraulic models representing both one-dimensional (linear) and two-dimensional (grid) representations of the river and floodplain, with 15 metre grid cell size, due to the width of the river. Due to the study area size, it was broken in to sections to be modelled separately. DEM smoothed to a 15 metre grid, with levee banks inserted separately to ensure accurate heights for overflows. |
Completeness | Complete for Murray River floodplain between the South Australia border and entrance to Lake Alexandrina. The lower lakes are not included. |
Positional Accuracy | Accuracy of the modelling will impact the range (depth) of inundation. The positional accuracy based on this will vary dependent on local terrain features.
Model DEM has vertical accuracy of +/- 0.15m. |
