Description This dataset contains Bushfire Last Resort Refuges. It is displayed and explained further on the Bushfire Safer Places page on the CFS website. The following is an excerpt of part of the information on that page, taken in March 2021: "Bushfire Last Resort Refuges are your LAST choice of location to shelter from a bushfire. A Bushfire Last Resort Refuge is a space or building which you could go to and remain in during a bushfire in your area. It is an area that provides a minimum level of protection from the immediate life threatening effects of radiant heat and direct flame contact in a bushfire. A Bushfire Last Resort Refuge is intended to provide a place of relative safety during a bushfire. It does not guarantee the survival of those who assemble there. You should only use a Bushfire Last Resort Refuge when your personal Bushfire Survival Plans cannot be implemented or have failed."
Dataset Use The dataset is displayed on the CFS website and is available as open data on data.sa.gov.au.

Data Quality

Lineage Bushfire Last Resort Refuges are assessed using AS 3959 - Construction of buildings in bushfire-prone areas and the Radiant Heat Flux calculation tool from Newcastle Bushfire Consulting. The assessment of a Bushfire Last Resort Refuge takes into account vegetation type, site slope, vegetation slope, public safety issues and access. During an assessment, consultation may occur with relevant Local Councils, sporting or community groups, Government Departments, private landholders or groups and CFS (local and Region). Post field and in-office assessments, a recommendation report is generated for the relevant Bushfire Management Committee (BMC). The BMC must formally either endorse or reject the recommendation report. If endorsed, the Bushfire Last Resort Refuges dataset is updated from the assessment details.
Completeness Complete. However, this is a dynamic dataset that will change over time.
Positional Accuracy Bushfire Last Resort Refuges are typically located in the centre of a sporting oval or community building and are either based on GPS, land parcel or aerial imagery data. Locations are verified and checked by CFS in collaboration with the BMCs.
