Description
| Description | This dataset indicates those modified landscapes that maintain habitat features that are critical to the conservation of biodiversity but do not get recognised (or mapped) as habitat or native vegetation. These are typically substantially modified farming landscapes where existing land uses and significant environmental values co-exist in a way that provides mutual benefits. The generally open and undeveloped nature of these landscapes should be maintained through appropriate zoning to support continuation of the primary production systems that create environmental niches for target species. |
| Usage | This dataset was developed to support land use planning decisions. |

Data Quality
| Lineage | This dataset was developed to identify low contrast modified landscapes that are likely to provide critical habitat for species of conservation concern.
Existing spatial datasets representing habitat, including ecosystems of SA, SA land cover, land use and SA vegetation were collated and aligned with the Global Ecosystem Typology (version 2.1) functional groups based on their compositional, structural, functional and environmental setting characteristics. Each functional group was then assessed against whether their structure, function and dynamics could potentially be mimicked in modified landscapes. Those habitats identified as potentially persisting in modified landscapes were mapped across the agricultural zone.
Existing land use mapping was then used to identify ALUM land use categories which have a low contrast level compared to natural landscapes. Those identified as low contrast were mapped across the agricultural zone.
These two datasets were then combined, further analysed using unsupervised machine learning to identify natural groupings of low contrast ecosystems and land uses, evaluated using statistical measures and validated using existing field data. The final step was to erase areas of existing 'natural habitat' from the resulting 'low contrast' landscapes to create the 'modified landscapes with natural habitat character' layer. |
