Description The IBRA Associations of South Australia Version 7.0 (Incomplete - Part SA Only) represents a landscape based approach to classifying the land surface of South Australia. The IBRA Assocations of SA mapping is derived from the Environments of South Australia, re-interpreted to inform the South Australian contribution to the Interim Biogeographic Regionalisation for Australia (IBRA) hierarchical framework, first described by Thackway and Cresswell (1995). In South Australia the IBRA Associations of SA mapping provides an additional level of mapping below IBRA Subregions within the nested IBRA hierarchical framework with mapping available for mapping units unchanged between IBRA Version 6.1 to IBRA Version 7.0 for SA only. Each Association reflects a unifying set of major environmental influences (such as geology, landform patterns, climate & ecological features) which shape the occurrence of flora and fauna associations and their interaction with the physical environment at a more localised scale relevant for South Australia. 221 Associations have been delineated within the parts of South Australia unchanged between IBRA Version 6.1 and IBRA Version 7.0 (382 Associations were originally described for South Australia). This metadata record represents IBRA Associations for SA Version 7.0 (Incomplete - Part SA Only).
Dataset Use IBRA is the National Reserve System's planning framework it was developed as a fundamental tool for identifying reservation targets towards developing a comprehensive and representative reserve system in Australia. Associations of SA provide a regionalisation at a finer-scale than either IBRA Regions or Subregions. They provide increased regional context in areas outside of the pastoral districts. There have been updates to IBRA Regions and Subregions within the pastoral districts so that linework of mapping units no longer allign to the Environments of South Australia 'Environmental Associations' that has been the basis for IBRA in SA..

Lineage In South Australia, the work undertaken by the CSIRO to map the Environments of South Australia (see Laut, et. al. 1977) has formed the building blocks for the mapping of IBRA boundaries for the state. The IBRA Associations of SA are dervived from the 'Environmental Association' units, described as part of this work. The Associations of SA boundaries were reviewed and aggregated to initially form IBRA Regions (Version 4.1 in 1995) and then for the two level hierarchy of IBRA Subregions / Regions (Version 5.1 in 2000 & Version 6.1 in 2004). In 2005 the Subregion boundaries in the South Australian pastoral districts were re-interpreted based on an assignment of the pastoral land system mapping units to Subregion groupings. As part of that update, the land system mapping units were used to replace the original CSIRO-sourced Associations of SA mapping unit in the pastoral districts of the state. The IBRA Bioregions are no longer alligned with Association mapping units in the SA pastoral districts and therefore excluded from this datatset. The IBRA Region and Subregions updates were initially featured in SA-only draft IBRA Regions and Subregion layers designated Version 6.2 (an IBRA Association for SA Version 6.2 layer was not released). The updates to SA IBRA Bioregions are now fully incorprated in the national IBRA Version 7.0 dataset with some edge-matcging to adjacent State's linework. The South Australian coastline and state border layer linework have been incorporated to define the dataset boundaries for IBRA Associations, which is different to IBRA Bioregions (see 'Comments' below). All line work and attribute updates for South Australian IBRA data are undertaken at the smallest mapping unit level maintained (Landsystems in the pastoral district and Associations elsewhere). Further work would be required to re-interpret IBRA Association boundaries and descriptions in the SA pastoral districts (based on the agggregation or division of land system polygons).
Completeness The dataset is periodically updated as the basis for IBRA Bioregions in South Australia. Updates to Associations the form the basis for IBRA Bioregions Version 7.0 are complete. Additional work is required to re-interpret IBRA Association boundaries and descriptions in the SA pastoral district mapping units in these locations are not provided in this dataset. IBRA Associations are complete for the state for IBRA Version 6.1 which is available as a separate dataset. Any additional updates to Associations which would also update IBRA Bioregions would be incorporated in subsequent versions of IBRA.
Positional Accuracy The position accuracy of Association mapping within South Australia is nominally 1:1,000,000. The coastline and state borders are defined by SA topographic coastline and border datasets, and is up to 1:5,000 scale. Some changes to linework for the IBRA Association mapping units from Version 6.1 to Version 7.0, that are included in this dataset, are 1) Naracoorte Association, 2) Victoria Desert Association and 3) Coastal boundaries.

Maintenance Method The data is incomplete Associations of SA Version 7.0. Additional review of linework and descriptions would be required for the pastoral districts of SA to complete this dataset, however it is unknown when that work will be scheduled to occur.
