Description
| Description | Soil Characterisation Site dataset contains over 1,100 representative sites across the agricultural zone of South Australia, where descriptions by soil scientists have been made of morphology, chemical and physical properties, and landscape features of a range of soils. These sites have been selected to represent the variations of soils across southern South Australia. At these sites, backhoe or excavator pits were dug to depths of 150-200 cm. Profiles were photographed and described according to guidelines detailed in the Australian Soil and Land Survey Field Handbook (Yellow Book). Samples were taken from each layer, dried, ground and analysed for a range of properties relevant to plant growth and agricultural land management. Data from these sites has been entered INTO the SA Soil Site Database. Descriptions and laboratory data have been recorded at morphological horizons (down the profile) at each site. The information obtained has been used to inform the mapping of the Land and Soil Spatial Data of Southern South Australia. For further information see Mapping soil and land. Data Quality
| Lineage | Soil Characterisation Sites have been located on a cadastral basemap and digitized INTO GIS, however over recent years, coordinates have been taken from a GPS. Data is stored in GDA94, and supplied in Lambert Conformal Conic projection. |
| Completeness | The Soil Characterisation Sites dataset is 100% complete, however it is subject to amendment as and when more data becomes available. |
