Description

Category Coasts
Theme Coastal features
Keywords and Qualifiers MARINE Coasts
Dataset Type Spatial
Description A generalised coastal landscape summary for the coastal strip 1Km wide along the entire South Australian shoreline. The generalised classification is a desktop GIS study using existing data
Dataset Use This layer forms part of the wider Coastal Vision Project developed within Natural and Cultural Heritage for 2004. It is intended to give a broad indication of the landscape present within a 1Km coastal strip, particularly the extent of development and areas of possible developmental pressure along the coast.

Lineage The coastal landscape summary is a generalised dataset created using existing data sources. The summary consists of many 500x500m zones, generated from a lattice of mesh points orgins then clipped to a 1km coastal strip along the entire South Australian coastlineSELECT 1 FROM DUAL; used as the framework for the classification. To classify each summary zone a number of data layers considered natural(e.g saltmarsh, perminent waterbodies, veg cover & sand dunes) and Planning SA zoning areas consided developed(and additional shack location data) were rasterised using ESRI Spatial Analyst. Once rasterised the percentage of each summary zone considered natural and developed was calculated using zonal statistics. Based on pre-defined percentage levels each summary zone was then classified as one of 5 broad landscape types: Natural, Semi-Natural, Non-Natural, Semi-Developed & Developed. It is important to note that this Datset is a generalised summary of coastal landscape and the position of features within certain summary zones is a direct result of the accuracy of each layer of existing data. In addition the landscape summary has been altered using surrogate infomation to reflect the true nature of the landscape were underlying data sources were considered incomplete and lacking detail.
Completeness The dataset is considered complete as of September 2004
Positional Accuracy Postional accuracy of the data relates directly to the manner in which the summary zones were generated originally. In that process a mesh of grid points were generated, forming the orgin of the summary zones throughout the state. These summary zones were then clipped by a topographic coastline mapped at 1:50000 scale. In doing so the summary zones' positional accuracy will relate directly to that of the topograhic data used when clipping and as such may be considered +/- 25m.
