Description

DescriptionAustralian Bureau of Statistics' estimated resident population by South Australian Statistical Area Level 1 for 2011 to 2016. Data is derived from ABS Catalogue 3218.0 - Regional Population Growth, Australia, 2015-16 released 28 July 2017 and is based on the 2016 Census. Data downloaded from QLD Govt website - http://www.qgso.qld.gov.au/subjects/demography/population-estimates/tables/erp-sa1-aus-consult/index.php.
UsageUsed for mapping population size and distribution by Statistical Area Level 1 (as at the 2016 census). Note: Base data is covered by CC-BY 2.5, however the licence conditions prohibit calculating percentage changes and graphing or charting data. Refer to [Licence conditions] worksheet in original data available from http://www.qgso.qld.gov.au/subjects/demography/population-estimates/tables/erp-sa1-aus-consult/index.php.

Data Quality

LineageEstimated resident population (ERP) is the official estimate of the Australian population, which links people to a place of usual residence within Australia. Usual residence within Australia refers to that address at which the person has lived or intends to live for six months or more in a given reference year. For the 30 June reference date, this refers to the calendar year around it. Estimates of the resident population are based on Census counts by place of usual residence (excluding short-term overseas visitors in Australia), with an allowance for Census net undercount, to which are added the estimated number of Australian residents temporarily overseas at the time of the Census. A person is regarded as a usual resident if they have been (or expected to be) residing in Australia for a period of 12 months or more over a 16-month period. Population estimates for Australia and the states and territories are updated by adding to the estimated population at the beginning of each period the components of natural increase (births minus deaths, on a usual residence basis) and net overseas migration. For the states and territories, account is also taken of estimated interstate movements involving a change of usual residence. After each Census, estimates for the preceding intercensal period are finalised (rebased) by incorporating an additional adjustment (intercensal difference) to ensure that the difference between the ERPs at the two respective Census dates agrees with the total intercensal change. ERP at the SA1 level must be used with caution, with an understanding that they are not precise, and that they are essentially prepared to be built up to other levels. No validation of these SA1-level estimates is undertaken and several cautionary notes about the reliability of these estimates are included in the Explanatory Notes. ERPs at the SA1 level are provided here to enable flexibility to be built up to broader regions.
